Some people think that dancing is just fun. However, it is an art that
must be thoroughly studied if you wish to master it. Traditional dance
demonstrates Cambodia’s culture, with forms such as Ram Vong, Ram Kbach,
Saravan and Lam Leav representing the nation to the world.
However, young people today show little interest in traditional dance. While it is still popular at weddings, many young people do not like to dance the traditional forms, either because the dances are too difficult or because they prefer modern dancing from abroad.
Even if a traditional Khmer song is played at a party, young people still often dance as if they were at a disco.
Men Tola, 19, who studies at Sisowath High School, said he prefers to disco dance at New Years and weddings.

“I do not want to dance Ram Vong and Ram Kbach because they are tiring and slow. “
Nonetheless, Tola said traditional Khmer dance is important because it is unique in the world. He added that its principles are wonderfully different from foreign dancing, which he said is mostly designed for exercise and stress release.
