Bidens Pilosa L.

  • Scientific Name: Bidens Pilosa L.
  • English Name: Beggarsticks
Erect, slender, branched, annual herb. Stem hollow, ribbed, green or tinted purple. Leaves petioled, pinnate, usually with three acute leaflets. Terminal leaflet larger than adjacent opposite leaflets. Leaf margin serrated. Inflorescence consists of congested flower heads borne on slender stalks. Flower head consists of yellow orange tubular disc florets and white ray florets surrounded by two rows of narrow bracts. Fruits is blackish achene with 2 strongly toothed awns.

Found in cultivated lands, gardens, open waste places, and along roadsides. Grows easily with annuals and perennials in different types of plant communities. Easily recognized by its black barbed fruits radiating in different directions from a common receptacle.

Propagation by seeds. A plant produces 3,000-6,000 seeds. Seeds readily germinate at maturity, making possible 3-4 generations per year.


An alternate host of the fungi Cercospora megalopotamica Speq. and Uromyces bidenticola (P. Henn.) Arth.; nematodes Meloidogyne sp. and Paratylenchus minuta Linford; and viruses that cause spotted wilt, ground rosette, and aster yellows.
